NEBOSH National/International General Changes

By Natalia Sopiela 28th January 2026

What is National/International General?

This is a course that covers:

  • How to effectively manage Health & Safety
  • How to identify and control common workplace hazards
  • How to measure if you've been successful
  • Legal requirements

Successful learners will be able to:

  • Carry out risk assessments
  • Develop and implement a detailed action plan
  • Manage and minimise workplace risks
  • Support and develop your company's health and safety culture

How is it assessed:

  • NG1/IG1 - An Open Book Exam (OBE), this is a scenario based exam. After, you need to attend a closing interview - where you'll be asked questions about your submission.
  • NG2/IG2 - A practical risk assessment of your workplace or area of your choice.

Assessments are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

(NG - National General  |  IG - International General)

HOWEVER, the National General and International General qualifications are changing, with the first assessments taking place on the 4th of March 2026, see below what's new:

UNIT 1 (NG1/IG1)

  • Unit name changes:
    • NG1 --> GNC1
    • IG1 --> GIC1
  • This will continue as a 24-hour scenario based exam.

UNIT 2 (NG2/IG2)

  • Unit name changes:
    • NG2 --> GNC2
    • IG2 --> GIC2
  • This will continue as a practical risk assessment, but there's some changes to:
    • Submission - the assessment will need to be submitted by the learner in the same way as Unit 1, via the online NEBOSH Assessment Platform. Deadline to submit this unit will be 10 working days after completing Unit 1 (GNC1/GIC1)
    • Marking Criteria - Instead of the risk assessment being marked as 'Met' or 'Not Met' for each section, it will be based on points out of 100. The 'PASS' mark is 60% (60 out of 100). Anything below that (59% or less), would be 'REFER'.
    • Results - both Unit results will be issued on the same day, 60 working days after completing Unit 1 (GNC1/GIC1). Meaning the learners will receive the outcome of their whole qualification at the same time.

(The assessment template and guidance booklet has information on how many marks each section is worth).

Re-sits

  • If you've been 'referred' in your NG2/IG2 before any changes happened, you have until August 2026 to re-take the exams. After August, you would move to the new exam GNC2/GIC2.
  • Feedback - you will receive a feedback document with a mark breakdown, this will be automatically emailed to you along with your results.
